Medical Outreach and Blood Donation Drive – Osogbo, Osun State

On 9 May 2025, the Benson Adeyemi Foundation (BAF), in collaboration with Osun Donate and the UNIOSUN Medical Students, organized a medical outreach focused on promoting voluntary blood donation while providing essential health services to the community. This initiative forms part of The Purple Initiative, BAF’s commitment to improving access to healthcare and saving lives through collective action.

Objectives

The outreach aimed to encourage voluntary blood donation, raise awareness about its importance, and provide basic health services to the public. By combining medical screenings with blood donation efforts, BAF sought to improve community health while contributing to life-saving blood reserves for local hospitals.

Activities

The outreach commenced with the BAF team arriving at the venue by 8:00 a.m. to set up. The BAF stand served as the first point of contact for all participants, guiding them through the registration and screening process.

The team included six nurses, one doctor, one media personnel, five BAF team members, and several volunteers, all working together to ensure a smooth flow of activities.

Participants first underwent basic health screenings, including blood pressure checks, random blood sugar tests, and weight assessments. After receiving their results, they were assigned numbers based on their order of arrival and proceeded to blood sample collection to confirm their eligibility to donate. Results were available within minutes, allowing eligible donors to advance to the blood donation point.

In addition to BAF, other key partners — including the Abiola Aderemi Girls Mental Health Foundation and the Nigerian Red Cross — contributed to the success of the event.

Outcomes and Impact

The outreach had a remarkable turnout, with 333 individuals benefiting from health checks and over 200 successful blood donations recorded. Participants ranged in age from 17 to 80, demonstrating broad community engagement.

The event concluded at 4:00 p.m. and had a significant positive impact:

  • Life-Saving Resource: Over 200 units of blood were made available to local hospitals for emergencies, surgeries, and other critical medical needs.
  • Increased Health Awareness: Participants gained insights into their health status, particularly regarding hypertension and diabetes, encouraging proactive health management.
  • Promotion of Voluntary Blood Donation: The event fostered a culture of regular blood donation, ensuring a more reliable blood supply for the future.
  • Strengthened Community Collaboration: The outreach united medical professionals, students, volunteers, and local residents, reinforcing a shared commitment to public health.

Conclusion

This medical outreach and blood donation drive was a resounding success, addressing immediate health needs while contributing to life-saving blood supplies. Through collaboration with key partners and volunteers, BAF advanced its mission of improving community health and building a culture of voluntary blood donation.
